Seperti yang semua peminat sukan sedia maklumu, Lee Chong Wei,32, telah diuji positif dexamethasone ketika ujian doping secara rambang ketika aksi Kejohanan Badminton Dunia di Copenhagen Ogos lalu.
Menurut Menteri Belia Dan Sukan, Khairy Jamaluddin, bahan terlarang dexamethasone yang diuji positif ke atas pemain badminton negara, Datuk Lee Chong Wei bukan dari Institut Sukan Negara (ISN). Ianya diterima dari Klinik Pakar Sukan Kuala Lumpur yang digunakan untuk memulihkan kecederaan.
"Dexamethasone dibenarkan kepada atlet yang sedang menjalani rawatan pemulihan.
"Biasanya bahan itu akan hilang daripada badan dalam masa 10 hari, namun dalam kes ini kami tidak pasti kenapa mengambil tempoh yang lama,"
Sebenarnya apa itu dexamethasone bahan terlarang dalam sukan?
The drug Dexamethasone is listed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of the most important medications needed in a basic health system. However, it is a banned substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (Wada) list of prohibited substances.
According to Wada, a substance or method can make it to its list if it meets any two of the three criteria: That it has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance; that it represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete; that it violates the spirit of sport.
Dexamethasone comes under the category of Glucocorticoids and is banned in competition only. That means if it were detected in the off season or before a competition, it would not be considered unlawful.
According to Tan Sri Dr Mani Jegathesan, the chairman of the Medical and Anti-doping Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia, the substance is considered to affect performances indirectly.
Under a strict liability rule, athletes tested positive for the drug are disqualified from the competition they participated in and incur a suspension from the sport.
